It can be exciting to move into a new apartment. It can be a chance to be out on your own for the first time, get a new start or even save money. However, moving into an apartment is really no different than moving into a house. There are things that you must take care of right away. Here’s a check-list of what needs to be completed after moving in.
Prep the Apartment Before Your Stuff Arrives
There are a number of things you can do as soon as you get the keys to your apartment. First of all, it’s a good idea to have an exterminator visit the property, especially if your area is known for particularly cheap apartments for rent or high turnover. While you may not see signs of pests, they can still be within the home. This is especially true if the property has been vacant for any length of time. The next thing you want to do is clean the apartment from top to bottom. Clean the bathroom, clean the kitchen, clean the floors and baseboards and scrub everything until the apartment smells fresh. You may also want to open the windows to air out the apartment.
Make Sure Your Items Arrived Safely
After your boxes are unloaded from the car or moving van, open the box with the most delicate items to see if the items arrived safely. Chances are if those items aren’t broken, all your other items made the trip without harm.
Take Your Time
You don’t have to put everything away at once. Start by moving the boxes to their designated areas and then unpack what is essential. For example, you might unpack bathroom items, bedding, curtains and any supplies you’ll need for the kitchen in the next few days. The rest of the boxes can be unpacked in the next few days after moving in.
Organize, Organize, Organize!
This is the best chance you’ll have to organize. As you put things away, make sure you put the items away in a sensible manner. For example, this is a great time to organize books, movies, kitchen cabinets and even your medicine cabinet.
Keep Noisy Neighbors at Bay
Before nightfall, you need to make sure the curtains are hung. The last thing you want is to have your apartment on view for everyone to see once it gets dark. This not only fuels gossip, but gives robbers a good idea of what they can steal. You should also introduce yourself to the neighbors so they have a better idea of who you really are rather than making assumptions.
Moving into a new apartment doesn’t have to be a hassle. Just remember to take it slow and organize as you go.
